Frequently Asked Questions

What if I get lost?

When you come up for the Meet The Tutor event and the Transition Days, we will spend time showing you around the school and running a scavenger hunt to help you become familiar with the site. We will give you a map and in the first few weeks you will move around school with your tutor group finding your way together. The staff are always on hand to direct you to the right place.

What are the times of the day?

You need to be at school by 8.40am and you will leave at 3.10pm.

Lesson times and social times

If I bring a bike, where should I park it?

Bikes can be parked outside the Maths block where there are stands. Please make sure you have a helmet and strong bike lock.

Can I use the computers at school?

You will have regular IT lessons, but you can also use the computers in the library and some computer rooms during break and lunch or after school. You can use the printers and photocopiers too.

Can I use the leisure centre?

You will use the leisure centre during PE lessons, and they often have offers and discounts for students who would like to use the pool and gym after school as a member.

What is the food like and where do I get it?

We have excellent food outlets for you to choose from across the school selling all sorts of hot and cold food and drinks.

Information about what you can buy

Can I bring a packed lunch?

Yes, many students bring their own food and eat either in the halls or outside on the benches or field.

What do I need to wear?

A smart uniform is important because it connects us together as a community and helps us to represent our school in the right way.

Uniform requirements

What do I need to bring?

List of the equipment you need

As well as these items, you might need PE kit on some days or cooking ingredients on others. Your teachers will let you know and it is important you check your planner and Google Classroom for any reminders before each day.

Can I wear shorts to school?

We allow tailored shorts to be worn between the Easter Holidays and Summer only.

Can I wear make up?

No. Make-up is not permitted.

Can I wear false nails or have dyed hair?

No, false nails and nail varnish are not allowed. Hair dye can only be used if a natural colour such as highlights. Not bright colours such as blue, pink and green etc.

Who do I go to if I feel unwell or hurt myself?

Report to student services or ask a member of staff for help and they will arrange for First Aid. The First Aider will call home if needed.

What happens if I forget my homework?

To start with staff will support you to complete your homework on time. If you forget your homework, please let your teacher know as soon as possible and they will arrange for you to hand it in at a different time.

If you miss homework too frequently, you may be given a lunchtime or after-school sanction. At secondary school, being organised makes all the difference.

What happens if I am late?

You will need to see your tutor if late but still in tutor time. If late to a lesson, you will be marked late on the register and may be placed into a lunchtime sanction to make up the time missed. Practice telling the time without your phone on a watch or analogue school clock and head off to your next lesson slightly early to make sure you have time to get there.

What happens if I forget my phone pouch or don’t hand in my phone?

If you forget your pouch, you will be given one to borrow. If you don’t put your phone into your pouch in the morning, you use it, or it is seen, you will receive a serious sanction as mobile phones are banned from the school site.

Who do I speak to if I am upset or worried?

You can get support from the Pastoral Team, The SEND team in the Bridge, your tutor or your teachers. There are lots of staff here to help you.

What happens if I am struggling to make new friends?

Your form tutor is on hand to support you with making friends and talking through any worries. You will be placed in a tutor group with someone you know, or you will have lots of opportunities to meet new friends by joining one of the many clubs in school. Making friends often happens very quickly as you are all in the same boat and feeling the same way.

What happens if I need SEND support?

We have an excellent SEND team, and they are here to support you in lessons. Read more about SEND support

What clubs can I join?

Taking part in clubs is a great way to make new friends and get to know your teachers. Here is a list of some of the clubs and events in school. If you want to start a club, speak to your Head of Year and they will help you.

What trips are there?

Trips are a big deal at FCC! We want you to have as many wonderful experiences as possible while you are with us. There are subject specific trips like the Geography field trips as well as the Ski trip and opportunities to visit different countries.
